Hector V.

Hector is an unaccompanied minor who fled Guatemala after the person who had murdered his father targeted him.  He fled this danger as well as an unstable family life in his country of origin in order to seek protection from the United States government.  He applied to the US Government for a "Special Immigrant Juvenile Visa" due to the lack of custodial and parental protection in Guatemala, and came to seek care from his older brother who is the only person able to provide custody.

Hector's goals are to graduate from high school (he is currently in 11th grade) and train to become either a plumber or a mechanic. He also hopes to heal from a recent tragic accident at a factory where he had just started work. On his first day on the job, a machine crushed both his hands. The medical team that treated Hector is unsure if he will ever regain complete use of his fingers.

Hector will use the grant to pay for physical therapy to rehabilitate his hands enough to resume working towards his high school diploma and to purchase books, writing materials, a computer and internet connectivity in order to be able to participate in virtual classes.  Finally, some of the funds will be used to pay for tutoring to help Hector improve his English language skills. Hector is committed to learning English in order to finish school and eventually get into a training program where he can learn a trade and provide a better life for himself and his brother.
