I’d like to be a part of the much needed change in addressing the mental health crisis going on in this country for women and the African American community. I am working towards my bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and would be the first woman in my family ever to obtain a bachelor’s degree.

Education has always meant so much to me. Growing up my dream was always to go to college and begin a legacy for generations to come. I graduated high school and immediately began attending THEE Chicago State University. I joined multiple organizations including, The Allure Models club, A Charter Member Of The Chicago State University Collegiate Section Of The National Council of Negro Women, The Association Of Black Psychology, and Cougars With Cubs. Community service and Women’s empowerment are the corner stones of my college career. As things were looking up for me, life happened and my family began facing hard times.

Within the last year, I had to become the head of my household. My family and I have faced many financial challenges. My mother is unable to work. Being a young, single mother, I had no other choice but to take on the role of making ends meet for my whole family. I stayed in school, got 2 jobs, and took care of my mother and my son to the best of my ability. But I suddenly got laid off due to the pandemic and things have gotten even harder.

I’m 7 credit hours away from obtaining my bachelor’s degree, but having an outstanding balance due for past tuition will prevent me from registering for my final semester.

After having multiple meetings and conversations with the financial aid department at my school, I was told there was nothing else to be done and my funds were exhausted. I was crushed. Being only 7 credit hrs away from obtaining my degree, and then to be shut down because of financial strife, It felt things were impossible. After working 2 jobs, doing work studies on campus, and participating in fundraisers, all have fallen short to pay off my balance.

I’m so close to the finish line and I need help to make my dreams come true.

With this grant I’ll be able to pay off my balance, register for my final semester, and graduate to be the first Generation Grad and provide a better life for myself, my son, and my family.
